II. d. Digital Elevation Model (DEM)
Estimated time:
2 minutes
A Digital Elevation Model is a grid in which each cell represents a different elevation. This can be a very powerful tool when it comes to watershed modeling. We are going to add some shading to our DEM to get a better view of the terrain.
In this exercise, you will:
- Select a color ramp for a layer
- Apply a “Hillshade” to the terrain
Text Version:
- Drag the “DEM” layer to the top in the Table of Contents
- Right click the “DEM” layer→ Properties → Symbology tab
- Left click Stretched in the “Show” box to the left
- Select desired “Color Ramp” in the drop down menu
(Note: It is recommended to use a dark color on the left side of the ramp to white on the right side of ramp.)
- Check “Use Hillshade Effect” box
- Select “Apply" → OK.
