We now have the route plotted with points, but we need to create a line to signify the route more clearly. In order to accomplish this, we need to have a blank shape file we can draw a line onto
In this exercise, you will:
- Introduce ArcCatalog
- Navigate ArcCatalog menus
- Create a blank polyline file
Text Version:
- Open ArcCatalog by selecting Tools -> ArcCatalog
- Locate your file with the existing shape files in it
(Note: Highlight the destination folder on the left, and a view the files will be on the right)
- Create a new shape file
- File -> New -> Shape File
- Specify the feature type as Polyline in the “feature type” drop-down menu
- Set the spatial referencing data
- Select Edit -> Import
- Browse to an existing shape file that contains the appropriate coordinate system (i.e. one of the layers provided to you) and select it
- Select Add -> OK -> OK -> Close ArcCatalog
