We now have the route plotted with points, but we need to create a line to signify the route more clearly. In order to accomplish this, we need to have a blank shape file we can draw a line onto

In this exercise, you will:
  • Introduce ArcCatalog
  • Navigate ArcCatalog menus
  • Create a blank polyline file

    1. Open ArcCatalog by selecting Tools -> ArcCatalog

    2. Locate your file with the existing shape files in it
    3. (Note: Highlight the destination folder on the left, and a view the files will be on the right)

    4. Create a new shape file
      1. File -> New -> Shape File

      2. Specify the feature type as Polyline in the “feature type” drop-down menu

      3. Set the spatial referencing data
        1. Select Edit -> Import
        2. Browse to an existing shape file that contains the appropriate coordinate system (i.e. one of the layers provided to you) and select it
        3. Select Add -> OK -> OK -> Close ArcCatalog
