I. c. i. Adding a single layer

Here you will only add one layer to the blank canvas and see what a single layer is about. Adding layers is the first step for any work to be done via ArcGIS, without added layers data examination and manipulation is impossible, this will be the Census layer.
In this exercise, you will:
  • Use the standard toolbar
  • Navigate a file system
  • Add an external data layer

    1. Left Click the “Add Data” button in the “Standard” toolbar

    2. Navigate to the downloaded “GIS_Layers” folder and select the Census layer to open by left clicking it

    3. Press “Add”

    4. The layer is now added to the ArcGIS view and is shown in the box entitled “Layers” with a checkmark in the box to the left of the layer name, signifying that the layer is shown in the map view
